Amazon to halt Kindle service in China in one year

Amazon said on Thursday that it will shut down its Kindle e-bookstore services in China by June 2023, citing an adjustment of strategic focus as the reason for the move. Kindle users will be able to download any purchased books before the service makes a full withdrawal next year, according to a company statement. Amazon shut down its Chinese online store in 2019, leaving just two businesses in the country, Kindle and its cross-border selling unit. The US e-commerce titan has further scaled back its presence in the country since then by closing its official store on the country’s major e-commerce platforms. Amazon is among a long list of US companies, including LinkedIn, Yahoo, and Airbnb, that have retreated from the world’s second-largest economy amid tightened scrutiny from local regulators.
