Woolworths supermarket shopper shares ‘mind-blowing’ hack at self-serve checkout using Pick List Assist technology

A Woolworths customer has been left gobsmacked after spotting a new feature at the self-serve checkouts of her local store.

Sharing on TikTok, the Woolies shopper was excited to see that the cash register automatically identified what fruit and vegetable she was attempting to scan – without her having to press any buttons.

“I was today years old my when I learnt this,” TikTok user @__Leesh___ wrote, adding the hashtag #mindblown.

In the past, Woolies shoppers have had to manually key in the name of the fresh produce on the cash register’s touch screen in order to find the item they were trying to purchase.

But now with Woolworths’ “Pick List Assist” technology, once the fruit or vegetable is placed on the scales it will detect which fresh produce it is without the customer having to type in any words.

For example, if a shopper was to place a banana on the scale, the cash register’s scanner will recognise that it’s a banana by its size, colour and shape and will then provide the shopper with a list of similar products to select.

Woolworths first introduced the technology at selected stores 12 months ago, but it has now been extensively rolled out across Australia and can now be found at 685 of the supermarket’s 1000 stores.

“We’re always looking for ways to make shopping easier for our customers,” a Woolworths spokesperson told 7NEWS.com.au.

“As we progressively upgrade our assisted checkouts, we have access to new technology, which helps customers find loose fruit and veg items in the system faster.

“The system uses image recognition technology to filter the list of possible products based on their colour, shape or size.

“So if a customer places a loose tomato on the scanner, the system will show a range of tomato varieties rather than the full list of fruit and veg items.

“This makes our self-serve that little bit faster and improves the accuracy of product selection for customers.”

7NEWS.com.au understands that Woolworths does not store or record any vision used in Pick List Assist.

The technology will continue to be rolled out across remaining Woolworths stores in the coming years.

How to use Pick List Assist

  1. Place the piece or bag of fresh produce on the scales of the cash register at the self-serve checkout.
  2. Press the “Fruit & Veg” button on the screen.
  3. The cash register then uses cameras built into the scanner to analyse the characteristics of the product, without you having to key in any words on the touch screen.
  4. After a few moments, the screen will give you a range of options that suit the size, colour and shape of the fruit or vegetable on the scanner.
  5. Once you see the option that matches the fresh produce you’re purchasing simply press on that item.
  6. The register will then weigh the fruit or vegetable and add the price to your groceries.
  7. Place the fresh produce in your bag and continue scanning.
