TCL, a Chinese electronics company, unveiled two new pairs of smart glasses, the TCL NxtWear Air and TCL Leiniao Air, at the 2022 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) on Thursday. Both products were independently developed by Thunderbird Innovation, a new AR company incubated by TCL Electronics and TCL Industrial Holdings.
TCL NxtWear Air
TCL NxtWear Air is an upgraded version of the company’s smart glasses NxtWear G launched last year, with the newer set of glasses weighing 30% less than the latter, down from 130 grams to 75 grams.
Like NxtWear G, NxtWear Air offers dual 1080p MicroOLED displays embedded in the frames of a pair of glasses. The lenses are opaque but do not provide AR or VR functions. They can be used in cinemas, games, office and other scenes, while the user can choose to see 2D or 3D effects.
The glasses are equipped with a built-in stereo speaker that can be connected to Bluetooth or wired headphones and are also equipped with two magnetic interchangeable plates, which can be attached to the front of the frame to change the style of glasses.
NxtWear Air will be available worldwide in the first quarter of 2022 but TCL has not revealed the prices yet. By contrast, NxtWear G was sold in limited quantities in Australia last year, selling for about 4,331 yuan.
TCL Leiniao Air
TCL Leiniao Air is the industry’s first binocular full-color MicroLED holographic optical waveguide AR glasses. This pair of glasses pioneered a full-color micro-display engine that balances efficiency, dispersion and mass production.
The full-color MicroLED + optical waveguide technology applied by TCL LEINIAO AR is a technical challenge that has been difficult to break through in the industry for many years, and it is also recognized as the best technology to achieve AR at present. In the future, this pair of glasses will be launched with more new functions including information prompts, photo sharing, smart connection controls, multi-screen presentation, interoperability with automobiles, and other functions.
