FCC approves texting to 988 to contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline

In late October, FCC chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel proposed broadening the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-8255) to accept text through the 988 three-digit dialing code– comparable to 911– to “much better assistance at-risk neighborhoods in crisis, consisting of youth and people with specials needs.” On Thursday, the complete four-member board enacted favor of enacting the proposition which will work by July 16,2022

Suicide was the 2nd leading cause of death in the United States for ages 10 – 35 in 2019 (10 th general), per the NIMH. Almost 45,000 individuals passed away by suicide in 2020, disproportionately affecting youths, black individuals, LGBTQ individuals, Veterans individuals, and handicapped individuals.

” Today’s action needs covered text service providers to support text messaging to 988 by routing text sent out to 988 to the Lifeline’s 10- digit number, 1-800-273-8255(TALK),” Thursday’s statement mentioned “The guidelines develop a procedure that will need covered text service providers to support transferring messages to 988 in extra text messaging formats that the Lifeline can getting.”
