MELBOURNE, Australia (AP)– A magnitude 5.9 earthquake triggered minor damage in rural Melbourne on Wednesday in an uncommonly effective temblor for Australia.

The quake struck about 130 kilometers (80 miles) northeast of Australia’s second-most populated city near the town of Mansfield at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles), Geoscience Australia stated.

Minor structural damage to chimneys, exteriors and older structures was reported around the Melbourne city. A medical facility near the center lost power, and fallen bricks cluttered some city streets.

Seismology Research Centre Chief Scientist Adam Pascale stated it was the biggest onshore quake in Victoria’s documented history.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison stated there were no reports of major injury.

The earthquake was the biggest to rattle Australia given that a magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck 210 kilometers (130 miles) off the northwest seaside town of Broome in 2019.
